Anouar Benmalek: French elections, the Arab...
Collateral Damage: Why has the question of relations between civilizations been raised in the French electoral campaign? Why did the UMP extend the anti-immigrant discourse to the relations between civilization when normally this discourse is centered on economic and security issues? Is it likely to have adverse effects on the foreign relations of France? France is generally perceived in the...

globalwarmist a demandé : At least Israel isn't oppressing her OWN people which Pakistan never learned from East Pakistan. As for supporting militants, it's pretty complex (my humble opinion). Durand Line is a mess and splitting the Pashtun area was utterly reckless and unjust (Kurd, Baloch, Basque) especially since they are a distinct ethnic group who prioritize autonomy. The border is porous so both state...
globalwarmist a demandé : I meant in terms of the instability of the region, a lot of stuff that happens to Pakistan isn't her fault although other stuff is. As for East Pakistan, if this was 1970s, they'd wanna do the same to the Baloch, pretty sure about that - disgusting
globalwarmist a demandé : There's one similarity between Israel and Pakistan that I find hilarious: self-victimization whenever criticized. Obviously Israel's crimes are far worse but it's still there
globalwarmist a demandé : your Israel and Pakistan post, I actually found it confusing. Doesn't India represent the whole of Kashmir in its map as well? Israel's makes sense in the way that it actually occupies those lands, Kashmir is split so the maps are pretty stupid
If the Republicans come into office this year, then the Mayans were actually right about 2012.

These days my fav topic is comparing Pakistan and Israel. Here’s one similarity:
Pakistan’s map, as issued by the state (the army, rather), includes the entire Kashmir as the part of Pakistan, the region which is occupied by India, as well as the part which is claimed by China.
Israeli maps show West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza and the Golan Heights as the part of the Israeli...
thatprettyoddfeminist a demandé : well, i suppose i'm appeased. :) now you get a question: if you were in charge of proposing a solution for israel and palestine, how would that go?

Fears grow for protracted war in Syria
Bassima Kadma said rebels were receiving military-grade communications equipment, bulletproof vests, night-vision goggles and medical gear with the help of international allies. Western officials said they were also considering providing the rebels, operating under the banner of the Free Syrian Army, with intelligence as well as sources of funding.
…
But other western officials said...

High-Altitude Surveillance Drones: Coming to a Sky...
Last week President Obama signed a sweeping aviation bill that, among other things, will open the skies to “unmanned aircraft systems,” more commonly known as drones.
…
What, exactly, will these drones be able to see? A lot, as it turns out. They will record the route and speed of every vehicle on the streets. They will observe the movements of individual pedestrians. At night, they will...

“One day he [Mangu] overheard a couple of his fares discussing yet another outbreak of communal violence between Hindus and Muslims.
“That evening when he returned to the adda, he looked perturbed. He sat down with his friends, took a long drag on the hookah, removed his khaki turban and said in a worried voice: “It is no doubt the result of a holy man’s curse that Hindus and Muslims keep...

Highlighting the limits of diplomacy to end the violence so far, a source with the Syrian National Council, the main opposition grouping, said arms were already being ferried to rebels fighting Assad’s forces inside Syria.
“We are bringing in defensive and offensive weapons … It is coming from everywhere, including Western countries and it is not difficult to get anything through the borders,”...

Yesterday I was talking to an Afghan friend of mine who lived for 10 years in Peshawar as a refugee. He told me that in mosques, during Friday prayers, the imam would pray for the same Islam to be in Pakistan as it was in Afghanistan. This was during the Taliban, before the American invasion. Well, the prayer was heard.

How to write about the Iranian nuclear issue
mak[e] the situation appear as if it’s a clash of civilizations, where an enlightened, rational, liberal, and democratic West is engaged with a backward, religious, and belligerent Iran from the East. The endeavor has so far been fruitless; the fatherly West has been unable to convince a childish Iran to forego its naïve claims to sovereignty. Iran still clamors to independently decide its...

The New York Police Department monitored Muslim college students far more broadly than previously known, at schools far beyond the city limits, including the elite Ivy League colleges of Yale and the University of Pennsylvania, The Associated Press has learned. Police talked with local authorities about professors 300 miles (480 kilometers) away in Buffalo and even sent an undercover agent on a...

Confusion about Palestine
Norman Finkelstein disappointed a few people after his outburst in an interview with Frank Barat regarding the BDS movement. Here are my replies to it:
When Norman Finkelstein and Noam Chomsky say that hypocrisy of pro-Palestinian activists rises to heaven when they call for the boycott of Israel but not the same for the US, American universities, their products, etc., they simply ignore that an...

When Iran and Israel were friendly
The alliance, though never formalized or publicized because of Israel’s unpopularity in the region, consisted of deep intelligence and arms cooperation, as well as oil sharing. In the late 1950s, Israel, Iran and Turkey formed a trilateral intelligence alliance and performed counterterrorism intelligence operations. In the early 1960s, they teamed up to support Iraqi Kurds fighting the central...
