Yesterday I was talking to an Afghan friend of mine who lived for 10 years in Peshawar as a refugee. He told me that in mosques, during Friday prayers, the imam would pray for the same Islam to be in Pakistan as it was in Afghanistan. This was during the Taliban, before the American invasion. Well, the prayer was heard.

How to write about the Iranian nuclear issue
mak[e] the situation appear as if it’s a clash of civilizations, where an enlightened, rational, liberal, and democratic West is engaged with a backward, religious, and belligerent Iran from the East. The endeavor has so far been fruitless; the fatherly West has been unable to convince a childish Iran to forego its naïve claims to sovereignty. Iran still clamors to independently decide its...

Pro-Palestinian protest ends in violence in London...
Violence erupted yesterday on the campus of the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE) following a pro-Palestinian protest staged by the university’s Palestine Society, according to the Beaver, the LSE Students’ Union newspaper.   A mock wall was erected on the campus grounds as part of the “Israeli Apartheid Week” events to re-create the checkpoint system in Israel.    Members...

NYPD monitored Muslim students all over Northeast...
The New York Police Department monitored Muslim college students far more broadly than previously known, at schools far beyond the city limits, including the elite Ivy League colleges of Yale and the University of Pennsylvania, The Associated Press has learned. Police talked with local authorities about professors 300 miles (480 kilometers) away in Buffalo and even sent an undercover agent on a...

Confusion about Palestine
Norman Finkelstein disappointed a few people after his outburst in an interview with Frank Barat regarding the BDS movement. Here are my replies to it:   When Norman Finkelstein and Noam Chomsky say that hypocrisy of pro-Palestinian activists rises to heaven when they call for the boycott of Israel but not the same for the US, American universities, their products, etc., they simply ignore that an...

When Iran and Israel were friendly
The alliance, though never formalized or publicized because of Israel’s unpopularity in the region, consisted of deep intelligence and arms cooperation, as well as oil sharing. In the late 1950s, Israel, Iran and Turkey formed a trilateral intelligence alliance and performed counterterrorism intelligence operations. In the early 1960s, they teamed up to support Iraqi Kurds fighting the central...

The austerity bill for Greece entails: laying off 150,000 workers, 22% decrease in minimum wage, as well as cuts in retirement benefits. On top of that, water and electricity services will be privatized. These are measures to put the country in a depression, instead of taking it out of recession.

The Middle East Quartet: A Post-Mortem
If the Quartet’s greatest strength was its ability to marshal the collective resources of its members and speak with one authoritative voice, its principal weaknesses was its tendency to be all things to all people. The malleability of the Quartet allowed its most powerful member, the United States, to dominate the mechanism so completely as to effectively transform it in virtually every way....

800,000 Kashmiris Haunted by Horror
Maheen was nine years old when she witnessed the death of her elder brother. At the age of 10 she saw the dead body of her neighbour, killed in the crossfire between Kashmiri rebels and Indian security forces, his guts spilled out on the road. The incidents left Maheen restless, irritable and insomniac, for which she was prescribed five miligrammes of Valium by a local physician. But even in her...

A few words on Bashar Al-Assad
He keeps what the US and Israel call « Stability ». The Syrians have been careful not to challenge Israel because they can’t afford confrontation with Israel. As long as the dictatorship remains (not just in Syria, but also in Egypt and Jordan) the government will be aloof when it comes to public opinion, which is highly pro-Palestinian. The US and Israel want the dictatorships to stay...

TEHRAN—Amidst mounting geopolitical tensions, Iranian officials said Wednesday they were increasingly concerned about the United States of America’s uranium-enrichment program, fearing the Western nation may soon be capable of producing its 8,500th nuclear weapon. “Our intelligence estimates indicate that, if it is allowed to progress with its aggressive nuclear program, the United...

EU and the US took the resolution to the UN knowing very well that it would be voted down by Russia and China; otherwise they would never have put forth anything at the UN. Western gestures are empty, for they all know that if they touch Syria, they automatically touch Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq and Iran. Bashar also knows that and that is why he can kill people without fear. What’s the option...
